Choose the Right Concrete Driveway Finish
Your driveway is one of the first things people notice about your property. The right finish can complement your home, improve street appeal and create an entrance you’ll be happy with for years.
OSM Concrete offers several finishes, each with different visual, maintenance and performance considerations.
| Finish | Best Suited To | What to Consider |
|---|---|---|
| Plain / Broom Finish | Practical driveways, rural accessways and budget-conscious projects. | A straightforward concrete option with a textured finish suited to everyday use. |
| Exposed Aggregate | Premium homes, modern entrances and natural stone aesthetics. | Aggregate selection, colour, texture, sealing and slip resistance all affect the finished result. |
| Coloured Concrete | Contemporary homes and larger driveways requiring a coordinated colour scheme. | Colour selection should consider the home’s design, sunlight, weathering and ongoing maintenance. |
| Stamped / Stencilled Concrete | Decorative driveways with stone, brick or patterned effects. | Pattern, texture and sealer selection influence appearance and wet-weather traction. |
| Decorative Resurfacing | Structurally sound existing concrete needing a visual upgrade. | Proper surface preparation is essential. Resurfacing cannot repair failed ground or ongoing slab movement. |
Considering exposed aggregate? Stone size, aggregate colour, cement colour and the degree of exposure all affect the appearance. Compare samples in natural light before deciding.

Real Concrete Driveway Projects on the Gold Coast
Anyone can promise a beautiful driveway. Our completed projects demonstrate how we approach everything from premium finishes and driveway widening to drainage, difficult slopes and full reconstruction.
178 m² — A Premium, More Practical Entrance
The existing driveway was widened to approximately 3.5 metres, opening to around 5 metres at the street. OSM removed old surfaces, installed additional road base, rebuilt the crossover and laid Alaska White exposed aggregate concrete.
The result: Improved vehicle access, additional usable space and a premium finish that complements the home.

124 m² — Replacing a Damaged Driveway
Tree-root movement had lifted the existing concrete, causing uneven sections and trip hazards. OSM demolished the damaged driveway and constructed a new exposed aggregate entrance with improved crossover connections.
The result: A renewed driveway that addresses the damaged sections rather than simply covering the problem.

Major Acreage Driveway Reconstruction
OSM removed approximately 416 m² of deteriorated asphalt and constructed a new reinforced concrete driveway. Works included culvert improvements, drainage upgrades, regrading and a new crossover.
The result: Improved access and stormwater management on a challenging sloping property.

750 m² — Large-Scale Coloured Concrete Driveway
A deteriorated asphalt driveway was replaced with coloured concrete across two major pours. The project included box drains, concrete pumping and council crossover works.
The result: A coordinated finish suitable for the property’s character, with drainage improvements and careful construction staging.
View the Helensvale Project →What Makes a Quality Concrete Driveway Last?
A great-looking driveway needs more than a good finish. Ground preparation, reinforcement, drainage and the connection to your property all influence its long-term performance.
Ground Preparation & Base
We consider existing soil, excavation, soft spots, compaction and base preparation before concrete placement. A decorative surface cannot compensate for unstable ground.
Drainage & Surface Falls
Correct surface falls help direct water away from garages and buildings towards an appropriate drainage outlet. Sloping properties may require channel drains, culverts or additional stormwater work.
Reinforcement & Control Joints
Concrete strength, slab thickness, reinforcing mesh and joint placement need to suit the intended vehicle loading and ground conditions. Reinforcement helps control cracking but does not eliminate it.
Driveway Levels & Crossovers
Garage entry levels, vehicle clearance, kerb transitions and the connection to the road all need attention. This is particularly important for steep or curved driveways.
Planning to park a caravan, boat, trailer or heavy vehicle? Let us know when requesting a quote. Heavier vehicles can require a different pavement specification, reinforcement or base preparation.
We assess the intended use rather than assuming every driveway needs the same construction detail.
Driveway Crossovers & Gold Coast Council Requirements
A driveway crossover connects your property to the road, generally across the verge and any existing footpath. Constructing, widening or modifying this access can require City of Gold Coast approval.
Standard and non-standard vehicle crossings may follow different approval processes. The appropriate design can depend on the street, kerb, existing footpath, trees, underground services and drainage arrangements.
Thinking of widening your driveway? Extending the concrete within your property does not automatically mean you can widen the street crossover.
It’s important to check the applicable approval and construction requirements before planning the work.
Should You Repair, Resurface or Replace Your Driveway?
A cracked or worn driveway doesn’t always need to be demolished. The right solution depends on the condition of the existing concrete and what caused the damage.
| Driveway Condition | What It Can Mean | Possible Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Small, stable cracks | Local damage without major slab movement. | Targeted repair |
| Faded or worn surface | Existing concrete may still be sound. | Resurfacing |
| Raised or sunken sections | Possible root damage, ground movement or base failure. | Targeted or complete replacement |
| Widespread cracking and settlement | The pavement may no longer be providing reliable support. | Replacement may be required |
| Water entering garage or pooling | Drainage outlets or surface falls may be inadequate. | Drainage correction, potentially reconstruction |
If the slab is sound but the finish looks tired, concrete resurfacing may offer better value than replacement. Where concrete has moved or failed, replacement may be the more durable solution.

Real Example: 600 m² Driveway Resurfacing in Tallai
At a Tallai property, OSM resurfaced approximately 600 m² of driveway after construction traffic had left the existing surface worn and contaminated.
Grinding, cleaning and surface preparation were completed before applying a decorative resurfacing system. The project was delivered within a three-day window ahead of property photography.
The project demonstrates how the right resurfacing system can transform a suitable existing driveway without requiring complete demolition.

How Much Does a Concrete Driveway Cost on the Gold Coast?
The cost of a concrete driveway depends on much more than its size. A flat, easily accessible driveway will generally be simpler to construct than a long, sloping driveway requiring demolition, significant excavation and new drainage.
These are the main factors that influence your quote.
Size, Shape & Finish
Total area, curves, driveway widening, detailed edges and decorative finishes influence the amount of material and labour required.
Demolition & Site Preparation
Removing existing concrete, asphalt or pavers, disposing of waste, excavation and ground preparation can significantly affect the cost.
Site Access & Drainage
Difficult access, steep gradients, concrete pumping, culverts, channel drains and stormwater improvements can add complexity.
Reinforcement & Council Works
Vehicle loads, slab design, reinforcement, driveway crossovers and relevant council requirements influence the scope.
Comparing concrete driveway quotes? Make sure you’re comparing the same scope.
Check whether each quote includes demolition, disposal, excavation, road base, reinforcement, concrete specification, drainage, crossover works, the selected finish and site reinstatement.
A cheap square-metre price can become expensive when important construction items are excluded.

Concrete Driveways Gold Coast — Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a concrete driveway cost on the Gold Coast?
Pricing depends on size, access, finish, excavation, existing demolition, base preparation, reinforcement, drainage and crossover requirements. OSM provides project-specific quotes based on the work required rather than a generic square-metre rate.
What is the best concrete driveway finish?
Exposed aggregate is a popular premium option for its natural stone appearance. Plain broom-finished concrete is practical and generally more economical, while coloured, stamped and stencilled concrete provide additional decorative choices. The best finish depends on your home’s appearance, driveway slope, maintenance preferences and budget.
How thick should a concrete driveway be?
There isn’t one specification suitable for every driveway. Concrete thickness, reinforcement, strength and joints depend on vehicle loads, ground conditions and the required design. Driveways carrying heavier vehicles may need different construction details.
Can you widen an existing concrete driveway?
Yes, subject to the existing site conditions and design. We assess how the extension will join the existing concrete, the supporting ground, drainage and any proposed changes to the council crossover.
Can you construct concrete driveways on steep blocks?
Yes, where a suitable design and access arrangement can be achieved. Gradient changes, vehicle clearance, surface traction, drainage and earthworks all need consideration. Our Tallebudgera project demonstrates experience with sloping acreage driveways.
Do I need council approval for a driveway crossover?
The appropriate approval is required when constructing or modifying a vehicle crossing on a City-controlled road. Standard and non-standard designs may have different approval requirements.
Can you resurface a cracked concrete driveway?
Sometimes. Resurfacing is suitable only when the existing concrete provides an appropriate, stable substrate. It cannot resolve continuing settlement, tree-root movement or failed foundations. We assess the cause of the damage before recommending an option.
How long before I can drive on new concrete?
Concrete gains strength over time, and the appropriate waiting period depends on the mix, conditions, finish and project requirements. We advise when the completed driveway can safely accept vehicle traffic.
Does a new concrete driveway need sealing?
Sealing requirements vary by finish. Decorative exposed aggregate, stamped concrete and resurfacing systems may require or benefit from specific sealers. Different finishes have different maintenance needs. See our concrete driveway resealing guide .
