Wonga Park Upgrade – Burleigh Heads

Overview

Transforming Wonga Park into a Modern Community Recreation Hub

OSM Concrete was proud to play a key role in the Gold Coast City Council’s Wonga Park Upgrade in Burleigh Heads, delivering nearly 1,000m² of reinforced concrete infrastructure as part of a major community improvement project.

The upgrade transformed an ageing park affected by flooding, drainage issues and outdated facilities into a modern recreational destination featuring new pathways, a basketball court, playground facilities and a pump track. The completed park now provides improved accessibility, increased recreational opportunities and a significantly better experience for the local community.

Delivered in close collaboration with Gold Coast City Council crews and other project stakeholders, the project showcased OSM’s ability to work within a staged construction environment while maintaining quality, flexibility and programme commitments. The project aligns with the type of public infrastructure and community space improvements OSM regularly delivers across the Gold Coast.

Project Challenges

Like many council infrastructure projects, the success of the Wonga Park Upgrade relied heavily on coordination, communication and adaptability.

The project was delivered alongside substantial earthworks being undertaken by council crews. As different areas of the site became available, OSM’s team mobilised in stages to complete the required concrete works.

Weather also presented ongoing challenges, with rainfall regularly affecting site access and construction sequencing. Maintaining progress while working around weather events required careful planning and flexibility from both the OSM team and project stakeholders.

Access constraints at certain sections of the site created additional challenges, particularly where grades and earthworks limited equipment movement. Through proactive planning and strong collaboration with council crews, these issues were successfully managed without impacting the overall outcome.

Construction & Delivery

The project was delivered through a staged construction programme over a couple of months.

OSM worked closely with Gold Coast City Council project personnel and onsite crews to ensure each section could be completed efficiently as earthworks and associated infrastructure activities progressed.

This collaborative approach allowed works to be sequenced effectively while maintaining productivity and construction quality throughout the project.

A key strength of OSM’s delivery was the team’s ability to adapt quickly to changing site conditions while maintaining programme commitments. Our crews regularly adjusted scheduling, resources and construction sequencing to ensure works progressed smoothly alongside other contractors and council operations.

The result was a highly successful project delivered with minimal disruption and strong stakeholder relationships throughout.

Outcome

The completed Wonga Park Upgrade has delivered significant benefits to the local community.

The new basketball court, pump track, playground facilities and upgraded pathway network have created a vibrant recreational destination that is heavily utilised by residents and visitors alike.

Council’s broader upgrade works also successfully addressed historical flooding and drainage issues, improving accessibility and long-term functionality throughout the park.

The result is a safer, more accessible and more enjoyable public space that will continue serving the community for many years to come.

The Wonga Park Upgrade reflects the values that underpin every OSM project.

We take pride in building strong relationships, working collaboratively with stakeholders and delivering quality outcomes regardless of project complexity.

This project highlighted our ability to integrate seamlessly with council teams, adapt to changing site conditions and consistently deliver high-quality concrete infrastructure within a staged construction environment.

Most importantly, it resulted in a community asset that is heavily used and genuinely improves the experience of the people who visit the park.
