Overview

OSM Concrete was engaged as Principal Contractor to deliver a series of public infrastructure improvements along Helensvale Road for the City of Gold Coast.

The project involved the removal of existing traffic islands, demolition of heavily deteriorated asphalt pathways, construction of new wider concrete footpaths, landscaping reinstatement works and extensive site clean-up operations.

Located on a busy road corridor adjacent to a school and active roundabout, the project required careful planning, traffic management and staged delivery to maintain public safety while achieving an aggressive construction programme.

Despite the complexity of the works and the live environment, all construction activities were completed safely and efficiently within a one-week delivery window.

Project Challenges

One of the major challenges on this project was completing works safely within a busy live traffic environment adjacent to a school and heavily used roundabout.

Traffic lanes required temporary closures and careful coordination to minimise disruption while maintaining safety for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.

The pathway works were specifically scheduled during school holiday periods to reduce risks and minimise impacts on school-related traffic movements and pedestrian activity.

The project also operated under a very tight programme, with roundabout modifications completed during weekend works and the entire pathway upgrade delivered within a single week.

Successful delivery relied on detailed planning, rapid mobilisation and disciplined site management throughout construction.

Construction & Delivery

OSM Concrete worked closely with the City of Gold Coast project team to develop and implement an efficient delivery strategy prior to commencement.

Following project approval, resources, subcontractors and traffic management teams were mobilised within a week to meet programme requirements.

The roundabout upgrade works were completed during weekend operations to reduce impacts on traffic flow, while the pathway works were undertaken during school holidays to maximise safety and minimise disruption.

As Principal Contractor, OSM Concrete managed all aspects of the project including planning, traffic control, demolition, excavation, concrete construction, landscaping and final reinstatement.

The combination of detailed preparation, experienced crews and strong project management enabled all works to be completed quickly, safely and to council requirements.

Outcome

The completed project delivered significant safety improvements for the local community.

The removal of traffic islands and modifications to the roundabout improved vehicle and cyclist movements, while the new wider concrete footpaths created safer and more accessible pedestrian connections.

The removal of approximately 50 tonnes of rock and rubble also eliminated existing hazards along the corridor and improved the overall presentation of the area.
